HONOLULU (AP) - The family of a Hawaii man who died after he was arrested in March is filing a lawsuit against Honolulu police and city officials.

Attorney Eric Seitz said Tuesday that Sheldon Haleck lost his life without just or reasonable cause. The lawsuit was filed in federal court.

Haleck was 38 years old when he died. Police officers say he was running erratically in the road, and police used pepper spray and a stun gun because he was uncooperative.

Authorities say Haleck became unresponsive and was taken to Queen's Medical Center, where he later died.

The complaint claims that police officers used excessive force and that authorities covered up the events surrounding Haleck's death.

The Honolulu Police Department would not comment on pending litigation. City officials didn't immediately respond to questions.
