Bubbies customers get last fix at store's university location

The lines at Bubbies are almost always out the door, but on Monday night, the line went around the block at the shop’s University Avenue location with eager customers after one last fix.

Some Bubbies customers waited in line for more than two hours for the last full night for the popular ice creamery.

Ewa Beach resident Stephen Sabala said he would miss the convenience of having the ice cream shop so close to school.

“It's the last time,” Sabala said. “Bubbies has been a monumental thing. It's really nice when you’re finishing classes at UH Manoa and rushing down the street to get it."

Even New York resident Zenniah Munoz said she’d miss Bubbies.

"I've tasted it before and it tastes really delicious and it's so convenient,” Munoz said.

The Bubbies University location was been a mainstay for UH students for more than three generations. But it is shutting down because its lease at the Varsity Center isn't being renewed.

The store was named after the owner's grandmother, who first introduced him to ice cream. It's also well known for its rich homemade products and the suggestive names for its flavors.

UH student Anis Hamidati agreed that it wouldn’t be the same without Bubbies so close to campus.

“We can just walk down here anytime we want so now that it's closing, I really don't know where to hang out anymore,” she said.

Fans can still get their Bubbies fix at the company's Hawaii Kai store, which will remain open. The store will be open Tuesday, but closes at 6 p.m.
