Republicans are still trying to choose a new House speaker. Howard Dicus discusses some of the interesting points about the process.
The constitution setup the house with one person elected to be in charge. Surprisingly, the speaker does not have to be a member of the House, although he always has been. In theory, they could elect Donald Trump or Kim Kardashian to be speaker, but that's not going to happen. However, something else just might. Ordinarily the majority party elects the speaker. The minority votes for one of its own and the majority votes for one of its own. But there's no rule that says a Democrat can't vote for a Republican or the other way around.
