Starting this week, American Airlines is a single unified airline. The last official US Airways flight landed at Philadelphia Saturday morning.
US Airways started as All American Aviation founded in 1939. By 1953 it was all Allegheny Airlines, and by the 1970's it was one of the 10 largest airlines in the US by passengers carried, with hubs in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
Allegheny changed its name to US Air in 1979, but service was so poor passengers joked that US Air stood for "Unfortunately Still Allegheny Reality.
A merger with United was blocked in 2000, but in 2005 it was acquired by the discount carrier, America West.
The airline tried to buy delta in 2006, but Delta creditors weren't interested and it was then that US Airways CEO turned his attention to American Airline, an airline he once worked for.
That merger was corporately completed In 2013, and it has taken 2 years to fully integrate the two airlines.
