Hawaii fire officials seek $6 million for new fire station

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - The Hawaii Fire Department is seeking another $6 million to build a new station in Hilo, as the projected price tag of the facility has nearly doubled following an additional cost assessment.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports the County Council previously approved a $6 million allocation for the 12,000-square-foot fire house. The council is set to meet on Tuesday to review another $6 million request.

Public Works building division chief, David Yamamoto, says the project's environmental assessment estimated the cost of the station at $5.9 million last year, but that figure has jumped to nearly $11.2 million.

Yamamoto says the initial cost estimate was based on construction of the fire station in Kona in 2012, which cost $7 million.

The new station would serve Panaewa Makai to Waiakea Uka.
