Semi-truck clips utility line that causes power outage, road closure in Kalihi

KALIHI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

About 400 Hawaiian Electric customers are without power after a semi-truck clipped a utility line and pulled down a transformer on Kalani and McNeill Streets around 4 a.m., according to officials.

Kalani Street is closed from McNeill Street to Hau Street until further notice. Two traffic signals along Dillingham Boulevard were impacted as a result, and police are manning the intersections for safety.

Brian Cabral was walking to his workplace at Lion Coffee when he said he saw the top of the truck clip the corner -- of what he believed was a low-hanging wire -- and pull it, causing sparks and an explosion when a transformer hit the ground.

"It looked like a fireworks show," said Cabral.

He said the truck driver for Hawaii Transfer drove around the block and came back to see what had happened. He was not hurt.

HECO says the work could take hours and drivers should expect delays and road closures into the day.
