The visitor from New York who drowned Monday in waters off Lumahai Beach on Kauai’s North Shore has been identified as a doctor and reporter from ABC News' medical unit, officials said.

ABC News President James Goldston sent out a note to staff Thursday, announcing the death of 31-year-old Jamie Zimmerman.

Officials said witnesses called police Monday at 4 p.m. after seeing Zimmerman, who was alone at the time, being swept out to sea from the mouth of the Lumahai River. Lifeguards found her unresponsive in the water, about 200 yards east of the river mouth.

She was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators believe Zimmerman was trying to cross the river when she apparently lost her footing. Foul play is not suspected.

According to ABC News, Zimmerman researched stories and also offered meditation sessions for ABC News staff in New York.

Prior to her trip to Hawaii, she posted the following message on her Facebook page on Oct. 4:
