HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

As a pilot for the Blue Angels, Navy Lt. Matt Suyderhoud has flown all over the country.

And all that travel makes his return to Hawaii all the more sweeter.

When he landed Monday at Kaneohe Bay, his plane cockpit opened up and "I could smell the rain. The hula halau was out there, and I was like, 'Man, I'm home,'" he said.

Suyderhoud, on Oahu for the Kaneohe Bay Air Show this weekend, spoke to Maryknoll students on Tuesday.

He admitted, it was strange being the speaker at his alma mater. Suyderhoud graduated from Maryknoll in 2001.

Suyderhoud talked to students for about an hour on everything from his thoughts about Star Wars to what it takes to be a member of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps' elite flight demonstration squadron.

Being a member of the Blue Angels, he said, is "not necessarily about military service, but striving for excellence and striving for those goals that you set for yourself and that culture of excellence."

That culture of excellence will be on display this weekend, when Suyderhoud makes his first Hawaii performance as a member of the Blue Angels since becoming a member of the team in September of 2014.

"Coming here, representing the Navy Marine Corps and the Blue Angels is a blessing," he said. "I can't even tell you how excited I am. I'm just tickled right now."
