Sudden closure of Maui restaurant leaves dozens unemployed

KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A chain restaurant on Maui has appeared to suddenly close, leaving dozens of people out of work.

Customers and employees of Ruby's Diner in Kahului arrived Monday morning to find a "Closed" sign at the entrance.

The 40's-style diner had been open for almost 14 years in the Queen Kaahumanu Center.

A long-time worker says Ruby's had fallen on tough financial times in recent years, but no one was given notice about the closure.

"It was a shock to all of us," said Alia Ewaliko. "I'm sad that I don't have a job now, I'm unemployed but the most sad part is I had been with that company for thirteen years."

Ewaliko says 40 to 50 people are now unemployed, including her 16-year-old daughter who had just started working there a few months ago.

Ruby's Diner has 40 locations across the nation, including California, Nevada, and and Pennsylvania.
