WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A construction crew ruptured a synthetic natural gas line in Waikiki on Monday afternoon.

A subcontractor struck the marked 4-inch gas service line at about 1 p.m., forcing police to shut down part of Kalia Road near the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Surrounding roads are also off limits to pedestrian traffic.

Crews were working on installing a sewer line tied to the Grand Islander construction project.

The following statement was released by Hilton Grand Vacations:

"Earlier today, a gas line was hit by work being done on Kalia Road. Contractors are working with Hawai'i Gas on repairing the line. Kalia Road, from Ala Moana Boulevard to Paoa Place, will be closed until repairs are completed this evening. We apologize for the inconvenience and want to thank our neighbors and surrounding community for their patience and understanding."
