Rainbow Wahine overcome 'Beach' boogie to stay undefeated in conference play

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Prior to the 2014 volleyball season, the University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine had either won or shared 19 consecutive conference titles.

To put that in perspective, the last time head coach Dave Shoji failed to bring home at least a piece of a conference championship trophy, some of the Rainbow Wahine freshmen from a year ago had not even been born yet.

Last November, that streak was ended by the ladies of Long Beach State University. Winners of both games in conference play last season, the 49ers won the Big West conference championship and dethroned the Rainbow Wahine.

On Sunday night, the 8th-ranked Rainbow Wahine exorcised the sandy demons of Long Beach State, winning a spectacular five-set match that ended, as many Hawaii volleyball matches do, with a kill from junior opposite Nikki Taylor.

Hawaii lost set one, 22-25, and set three, 16-25, while winning sets two (25-12) and four (25-21). Their fourth-set momentum carried them to a 15-8 win in set five.

Tai Manu-Olevao, Kalei Greeley and Nikki Taylor each hammered home 12 kills for the Wahine. Sophomore setter Kendra Koelsch, playing in place of the injured Tayler Higgins, had another strong performance for the Wahine, with 41 assists.

Hawaii hosts U.C. Davis and U.C. Irvine next weekend.
