After more than 10 years at the top, Hawaiian Airlines dropped to third for on-time performance, according to new data released by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The new report said that Hawaiian’s North America and neighbor island flights arrived on schedule 81.5 percent of the time during the month of August. Delta Airlines came in first with on-time arrivals at 85.5 percent and Alaska Airlines at 82.9 percent.

Mark Dunkerley, president and CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, said the airline’s drop in performance is a result of more flights and passengers. These factors created a shortage of gates to handle flights at the Honolulu International Airport, thus delaying the customs and immigration process during the mid-morning peak.

“Abrupt changes to the routing of aircraft in and around Honolulu meant that flight times were longer than scheduled, and, to top it all off, construction related to the airport modernization project created additional congestion and delays,” Dunkerley said.

The Honolulu airport is in the midst of major renovation and upgrade projects that are expected to continue for the next few years.

“Airport modernization has been a long-time coming and we are certainly very happy to see it underway, but we have felt and will continue to feel short-term pain associated with this project,” added Dunkerley. “Our employees have been working with airport staff to manage these challenges and will continue to do so.”
