Bad weather has spurred a major course redirection for Hokulea on its worldwide voyage.

The Polynesian voyaging canoe’s crew had planned to visit Madagascar this week, but a storm closed the island nation’s main port.

Madagascar was to be a key destination because of its biodiversity and strong seafaring traditions.

With those plans scratched, the crew has set its sights on Richards Bay in South Africa.

Hokulea’s Malama Honua Worldwide Voyage kicked off in 2013. Over the course of the trip, the canoe plans to cover over 60,000 nautical miles, and visit 100 ports.
