The Department of Education on Hawaii island has a program that's geared toward native Hawaiian Children called "Project Kalo Preschool Program".
We talked to Art Souza who is the West Hawaii Complex Area Superintendent, HIDOE; and Taffi Wise is the Executive Director of Kanu O Ka Aina Learning Ohana.
Souza described how the program is a model for other programs that are helping in the educational engagement of children, making them "school ready". Taffi told how the program is not just a place to drop off pre-kindergarten children, it is a place where children and families establish good learning habits and facilitate a strong learning environment at home.
The program started in 2001 and has been funded by the US Department of Education in the past, but in 2013 Kanu O Ka 'Aina Learning Ohana stepped forward to continue the program. For more information go to their website.
