Man, 18, dies in apparent drowning in Wailuku River on Big Island

HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

An 18-year-old man died Wednesday in an apparent drowning after he tried to cross the Wailuku River and was swept downstream.

The man was identified as Kevin Jay Ishikawa.

Police and fire officials said Ishikawa tried to cross the river near the Piihonua Bridge about 3:35 p.m., when he was caught up in rushing waters. Ishikawa was with three friends, who were uninjured.

Witnesses said Ishikawa was under water for about three to five minutes before two of his friends were able to bring him to the river bank. The friends performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until rescue crews arrived about 10 minutes later.

The victim was taken to the Hilo Medical Center in critical condition, and was pronounced dead around 4:25 p.m.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine his exact cause of death.
