HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Honolulu police are investigating the death of a person on the H-1 Freeway near the Pali Highway overpass on Wednesday morning.

Police were called to the scene around 4:30 a.m. after a motorist indicated he or she may have run over a body on the roadway. Investigators are examining whether or not the victim fell onto the roadway from the Pali Highway overpass just prior to the incident.

Sources say multiple calls came into police dispatch about the body on the road.

Honolulu police closed off the H-1 in the eastbound direction -- between the Pali Highway and Kinau Street off-ramps -- for nearly four hours to investigate, causing a traffic gridlock. As a result, police later opened the HOV and zipper lanes to all drivers.

An unattended death investigation has been opened and police are asking any witnesses to contact them regarding this incident.
