KIHEI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Shops and employees at a Maui mall are on alert knowing a suspect is still on the loose after a violent attack last week.

Sources say the victim is six months pregnant. Her attacker pushed her to the ground, then tried to rape her at Rainbow Mall in Kihei. They say it happened about 7 p.m. last week Monday on the north side of the shopping center's main building.

Police sources say the victim was in the restroom and as she was opening the door to go out, someone on the other side shoved the door back toward her causing her to fall to the ground. They say her attacker then covered her mouth, sprawled her out on the floor on her stomach, pulled off some of her clothes and sexually assaulted her. They say she fought back. The attacker ran way after hearing a noise.

The woman was taken to the emergency room for treatment for her and her unborn baby.

Workers at the shopping center were stunned about the attack.

"It's kinda scary because it's a very small shopping center. Our restaurant is in the back by the parking lot, everything is pretty well lit, we have security and stuff, but it's kinda scary for that to happen during a peak time. It wasn't like after hours, it wasn't before hours," said Mike Sotelo, Maui Thai Bistro manager.

Sotelo says they have upped the security at the mall. He says security guards are patrolling earlier and more frequently. Sotelo also says he personally doesn't let his employees walk to their cars by themselves and many of his workers have stopped walking home at night.

Maui Police are asking for witnesses to come forward.

The woman was unable to get a good description of the attacker but sources say she did recall that he wore a sweatshirt and smelled like cigarette smoke.
