Local Connection: Domestic Violence Awareness Month

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, an opportunity for all of us to learn more about this issue and how we can come together to stop the violence.

Nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. In Hawaii, 50,000 women a year experience domestic violence. Every day over 500 victims seek support from local domestic violence programs.

Yet domestic violence continues to be severely under-funded, under-researched, misunderstood and often on the margin of public concern. More distressing, those impacted - our family, our neighbors, our co-workers - are often burdened by debilitating shame and stigma.

We can all join the effort to end domestic violence in Hawaii.

Educate yourself, learn about the facts and the impact of this crime; support survivors, believe them and listen to them and  what they need.

Take a stand, join Hawaii News Now as an Ally of Hawaii Says NO MORE, an
unprecedented effort to end domestic violence and sexual assault in Hawaii.

Visit HawaiiSaysNOMORE.org to find out about events you can attend this month and how you too can become an Ally of Hawaii Says NO MORE.

Join me in wearing the NO MORE symbol to demonstrate our commitment to ending domestic violence once and for all.
