The state says emergency repairs to Wilson Tunnel are expected to wrap up within five weeks.

Crews started repairs Sept. 25, after a routine inspection identified damage to eight stainless steel supporting rods. Subsequent inspections found additional damage.

To complete the repairs more quickly, crews will close both Honolulu-bound lanes of Likelike Highway through the tunnel from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. daily. Closures will be announced at least three days before they happen.

The state had reported the work could take up to two months.

Commuters are advised to expect delays, and use alternate routes when possible.

The Wilson Tunnel opened to traffic in 1960.
