The 21st Annual Men’s March Against Violence is set to take place Thursday, October 8 at 12 noon. Taking a stand against domestic violence, this annual event features a short march and rally in support of non-violence.
The March will begin at the State Capitol Rotunda and end at Skygate Park at Honolulu Hale. A rally, featuring guest speakers, will immediately follow the March around 12:20 p.m.
This year’s theme is “Walk the Talk.” Every 7.5 seconds, somewhere in America, someone is a victim of abuse by a current or former spouse or domestic partner, or a family member.
In the past 12 months since our last Men’s March, we’ve had five deaths in Hawaii that were domestic violence-related. We need the community to step up and put a stop to domestic violence. As our event theme states, “We need to walk the talk.”
To provide a perspective on the extent of the domestic violence issue: One of the event sponsors, the Domestic Violence Action Center, received 11,000 calls on the matter during the past year. The Domestic Violence Action Center provides specialized services to survivors of domestic violence. (Their legal hotline is (808) 531-3771.)
Some of the presenting organizations at next week’s event are:
Catholic Charities Hawaii
City & County of Honolulu
Domestic Violence Action Center
Hawaii State Coalition Against Domestic Violence
Kapiolani Community College
PACT (Parents and Children Together), and
