LANIKAI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Lanikai Pillbox trail was closed Tuesday as DLNR crews began to install a fence intended to protect homes from rockfalls.

The roughly 760 foot rock fall protection fence is being built on the hillside to guard the eight homes that sit below. Lanikai residents on the mountain side of Koohoo Place were also asked to leave their homes for a certain period during construction.

The $1.2 million dollar project is scheduled for full completion by mid November.

All the materials used for building the fence must be flown in from above, which is the reason for the lengthy duration.

"The chopper would have to hold the fence up in the air for a number of seconds, and possibly minutes and the workers will be trying to fit the bottom, base of the fence onto the foundation and lock it in," explained project engineer Ardalan Nikou.

Once the 16-foot-high metal fence is complete, homeowners will continue to pay for maintenance and upkeep.

Here is the project timeline:

  • February and March 2015 - Contractor Hi-Tech Rockfall Construction, Inc. mobilized and began work to remove hillside vegetation and lay out the rockfall fence alignment.
  • March and April 2015 - Excavation of foundations for the fence posts.
  • July and August 2015 - Drilling and installation of ground anchors for the rockfall fence.
  • September and October 2015 - Cleaning excavated foundations of mud and debris due to inclement weather.
  • October 2015 - Pouring of concrete for excavated foundations. American Standard Concrete Pumping to mobilize a high rise concrete pump capable of pumping 700 feet uphill.
  • October and November 2015 - Mobilization of fence materials via helicopter and completion of rockfall fence installation.
