TRAFFIC ALERT: Leaning pole closes portion of California Ave. in Wahiawa

WAHIAWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

[Update 11:50 a.m.]

California Avenue has been reopened except for one southbound lane.

Honolulu police have closed about two blocks of California Avenue, between Kamehameha Highway and Makani Avenue, due to a leaning utility pole and low-hanging wire across both lanes of the roadway.

Police were alerted to the damaged pole and low lines around 4:45 a.m. Monday.

A bus driver ran into the low hanging line in the dark and managed to stop before pulling the leaning and hanging wire further down onto the roadway. No one was hurt and no one was on the bus at the time.

Hawaiian Electric crews say none of their lines were attached to that pole; however, Hawaiian Telcom and Oceanic Time Warner Cable do have lines there.

Cable crews told Hawaii News Now they have outages in the area with possibly a few hundred residents impacted along with at least one business: American Savings Bank on Makani Avenue.

Police will monitor and alter the traffic closures based on the repair work and space needed.

Drivers can access side streets around the area to access the businesses along this closed portion of California Avenue.

Hawaiian Telcom officials indicate that the poles are inspected, but they have yet to determine what officially caused the pole to snap.
