HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The Honolulu Fire Department responded to a fire in the ventilation system of a ceramic kiln that was being operated near the fine arts building early Monday.

Fire Captain David Jenkins says about 32 firefighters were called to the Waialae Avenue campus around 1:56 a.m., and when they arrived, flames and smoke were seen coming out of the roof of the one-story facility attached to the fine arts building at Eiben Hall.

Crews used suppressant foam to assist them in the firefight. They had it under control at 2:14 a.m. and fully extinguished at 2:34 a.m.

Jenkins said a faculty member had been operating the kiln around 2 a.m. Investigators say the cause appears to be a malfunction in the kiln's ventilation system that caused the fire to spread within the surrounding roof.

The faculty member made it out unharmed. No injuries were reported. School officials will assess the damage. It does not appear that the fire caused any significant damage to the additional classrooms or structures.
