A contractor will have to fix a problem with the city's new fence along the Kapalama Canal. The chain link fence is blocking a fire hydrant on Kokea Street between North King Street and Dillingham Boulevard.

Contractors started the project two weeks ago to keep homeless people from camping along the waterway. Nearby businesses are concerned about the restricted access to the hydrant in case of an emergency.

"I'm kind of worried that if there was a fire and it affected our building, that the fire department would have to jump the fence. So I'm kind of hoping that whoever is involved, the city, will put a gate there," said Gwen Battad Ishikawa, managing editor of The Hawaii Herald.

The contractor, PIER Construction, will add an opening in the fence before the project is finished, according to Ross Sasamura, director of the Department of Facility Maintenance.

Sasamura said the Honolulu Fire Department is aware of the situation and can still reach the hydrant if necessary.
