Saint Louis School expanding to include all grade levels

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Hawaii’s only all-boys school, Saint Louis School, announced Friday that it will expand to include kindergarten through fifth grade class levels.

The Honolulu school will celebrate its 170th year in 2016, the same year it begins offering the expanded lower grade levels.

“After starting a fifth grade pilot program this year, it is clear that there is a great demand for students wanting to enter Saint Louis School at the elementary level,” said Saint Louis School Board of Trustees Chairman T. Michael Hogan. “We are proud to offer this opportunity to boys who are inspired by the traditions and legacy of our historic school.”

For the 2016-2017 school year, openings in Kindergarten through grade 5 will be limited, so parents are encouraged to contact the Director of Admissions, Russell Valente, directly at

“This is an exciting time for the Crusader ohana,” said Dr. Glenn Medeiros, who was recently reappointed from school president to Head of School.  “We now have a tremendous opportunity to reach students at the elementary level and incorporate educational strategies at an early age that empower boys to excel.”

Timeline of grade levels at Saint Louis School

1846 – 1950s   Grades 1-12
Mid 1950s       Grades 9-12.  Lower grades phased out for the Catholic Marianists to build a Catholic college (now known as Chaminade University)
1980                Grades 7 and 8 brought back
1990                Grade 6 included.  Department of Education introduced the middle school concept (grades 6-8).  Saint Louis School adopts the concept.
2016                Grades K-12 will launch.
