Equipment failure results in 230,000 gallon wastewater spill off Oahu

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The state Department of Health is urging people to stay out of the water in Mamala Bay, on Oahu’s south side, due to a large sewage spill.

Approximately 230,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater spilled into the bay on September 27 following an equipment failure, says the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC).

The sewage entered the bay through the facility’s outfall, which is about 1.5 miles offshore and 150 feet underwater.
