Waipahu intersection opens as rail crews begin final setting of line

WAIPAHU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Honolulu rail officials say that Kiewit contractors completed their work early over the intersection at Leokane Street and Farrington Highway in Waipahu, and the area is now open to traffic as they continue to lay the guideway along the center of Farrington Highway.

The next major intersection that will be closed due to the guideway will be at Pupukahi Street.

Officials said guideway construction will eventually start on the east end of Farrington Highway near Waipahu High School and will connect up with the spans now going west.

In addition, work on the guideway over the Fort Weaver Road overpass has been postponed for a few weeks while crews work on another area. Officials said the workers are now in the "final setting" phase and are going back over the guideway route to make the spans more permanent. The guideway spans are temporarily set when they are first installed and that means drivers and businesses should expect to see the same road closures initially involved in laying the guideway, again in the future.

Rail officials say Kiewit will notify residents of future closures when they near.
