Pedestrian hit, killed by truck in Iwilei

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Honolulu police are investigating a crash that killed a 63-year-old male pedestrian.

Traffic investigators say it happened just after 10 p.m. Wednesday in Iwilei. The man was in the marked crosswalk fronting Kmart near Sumner Street and Nimitz Highway. A pickup truck driver from Honolulu was headed westbound on Nimitz Highway when he hit the man, causing critical injuries.

The victim was taken to the Queen's Medical Center where he later died.

Police believe speed may have been a factor in the crash, but alcohol does not appear to be involved.

This is the 39th traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared to 48 the same time last year.

Police reopened the stretch of roadway around the crash at around 1:30 a.m.
