A 31-year old man was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting in Kalihi Tuesday afternoon.

Police sources say the man had a long gun in his vehicle fronting Dole Middle School.  A Honolulu Police officer saw the man reach for it and fired.

The man reportedly turned the gun on himself and also fired.

On Wednesday, the Medical Examiner confirmed the fatal shot came from the self inflicted wound when the man turned the gun on himself. Sources told Hawaii News now the man had multiple injuries.

Police say it started around 12:30 p.m. when family members of the man reported him missing. They told police he was distraught and armed. Officers spotted him around Honokai Hale near Koolina around 2:15 p.m waving around the gun, that's when police started chasing the man along the H-1 Freeway eastbound.

"The reason the pursuit ensued further is because there was some sort of menacing type action with the firearm on the street that officers could see. That's why there was a pursuit," said Maj. Larry Lawson of the Honolulu Police Department.

The chase ended right outside Dole Middle School on Kamehameha IV Road near the Kalihi police station. Maj. Lawson said the vehicle stopped and officers started to surround the man.

"Sometime during that a gunshot was heard and followed by another gun shot and the victim was then removed from the vehicle and transported to queens in critical condition where he later died," Maj. Lawson said.

"It appears right now that one shot was from the suspect, and one was from the officer," he said.

School officials say Dole Middle School was on put on lockdown from 2:40 to 3:04.  Some parents were waiting for kids outside because school gets out right at 3:00 p.m., so the school took them in for safety but no one else was hurt.

Police say the officer who fired the shot works in Kapolei and has 14 years of service.

Kamehameha IV Road between N. School Street and Likelike Highway was initially closed, but has since been reopened.
