Man dies following moped accident in Kapolei

KAPOLEI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Investigators say a 51-year-old man has died after he crashed his moped along Farrington Highway fronting the University of Hawaii West Oahu campus around 5:30 Tuesday morning.

He was identified as David Rodrigues from Waianae, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.

Witnesses told police that Rodrigues had been headed east toward Kualakai Parkway when he appeared to have swerved out of his lane and hit at curb marking the turn lane into the campus. That caused his moped to flip over and crash.

He was not wearing a helmet at the time.

Emergency Medical Services officials say the man was initially listed in extremely critical condition and was rushed to the Queen's Medical Center where he later died.

Farrington Highway was closed for a couple of hours while police investigated.
