MAKAPUU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has modified the days it plans to close the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail due to weather delays and the complex nature of the road repaving work.
The trail will continue to be closed weekdays from Thursday, Sept. 24 through Friday, Oct. 2. Additional closure days are needed to complete the removal of the existing asphalt road, lay the gravel base course and repave the mile-long road.
The following are the days in which the trail will be closed:
- Thursday, Sept. 24
- Friday, Sept. 25
- Monday, Sept. 28
- Tuesday, Sept. 29
- Wednesday, Sept. 30
- Thursday, Oct. 1
- Friday, Oct. 2
The trail will remain open on the weekend of Sept. 26 and 27 from 7 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.
During the closures, visitors are not allowed to access the parking lot or trail.
Large trucks are continually moving up and down the narrow road to bring in new paving materials. Meanwhile, crews are also continuing to work on new lookouts. The upper lookout will remained closed until renovations are complete.
