Japanese visitor lost on Mauna Loa rescued

A 40-year-old Japanese visitor was rescued after being lost while hiking on the Mauna Loa trail.

Rescue crews responded to the 7:18 p.m. alarm on Sunday and found the hiker about 1.5 miles above the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory.

The man was caught in rain, strong winds and temperatures in the low 50s after hiking all day and losing his way.

He was taken to Hilo Medical Center to be treated for hypothermia and exhaustion.
