HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake has shaken an area near the coast of Chile, but was not large enough to generate a tsunami threat to Hawaii, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The quake happened at around 7:40 a.m. HST.

It struck approximately 40 miles west-southwest of Illapel or 130 miles north-northwest of Santiago, the United States Geological Survey said.

This earthquake comes days after an 8.3-magnitude quake struck near the same area of Chile, causing massive destruction in the area and also generating a Tsunami Advisory for Hawaii that lasted nearly 17 hours.
