Third phase of enforcement in Kakaako homeless camps to begin Monday

Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced on Friday that the City and County of Honolulu Department of Facility Maintenance will continue phased enforcement actions in Kakaako Makai next week.

On Monday, September 21, enforcement of the sidewalk nuisance and stored property ordinances will take place on Keawe Street, from Ilalo Street to Ala Moana Boulevard; Ilalo Street, from Keawe Street to Coral Street; Coral Street, from Ilalo Street to Ala Moana Boulevard; and Ala Moana Boulevard, from Keawe Street to Coral Street (Makai side only), beginning at approximately 11 a.m. 

On Tuesday, September 22, enforcement of the sidewalk nuisance and stored property ordinances will take place on Coral Street, from Ilalo Street to Ala Moana Boulevard; Ilalo Street, from Coral Street to Cooke Street; Cooke Street, from Ilalo Street to Ala Moana Boulevard; and Ala Moana Boulevard, from Coral Street to Cooke Street, beginning at approximately 11 a.m. 

This follows the first two phases of the enforcement action that took place on September 8 and September 17.  Enforcements will continue to take place in a phased approach on the remaining blocks of Kakaako Makai in subsequent weeks.  Notices have been posted and handed out throughout Kakaako Makai in Chuukese, English, Marshallese, and Samoan. 

With the cooperation and support of the Hawaii Community Development Authority (HCDA), the city has a formal “right of entry” that allows the city to enforce its laws on the sidewalks throughout Kakaako Makai.  During these enforcements, the Department of Facility Maintenance is accompanied by State Sheriffs, officials from HCDA, and the Honolulu Police Department’s Community Policing Team, as well as surrounding area landowners.
