Coast guardsman honored for saving life

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - On Thursday, Petty Officer 1st Class Daniel G. Perez was awarded the Silver Lifesaving Medal during a ceremony at Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point. Perez received the medal after rescuing a drowning man at Bastimientos Island in the Republic of Panama, on November 9, 2012.

While on deployment, Perez, who was on leisure time, heard cries for help at Red Frog Beach from an elderly man caught in a rip current 10 yards offshore. Perez ran into the water and battled surf to reach the survivor.

"It is an honor to get recognized. I am grateful that I was able to help," said Perez.

Perez is a resident of Tamuning, Guam, which is an aviation maintenance technician currently stationed at Air Station Barbers Point.
