NORTH KOHALA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - The U.S. Coast Guard and Hawaii Fire Department are searching for a missing free diver off the Big Island.
Friends of the diver, who were with him at the time, reported the missing man at around 2:40 a.m. Thursday after he was last seen at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in waters off the Old Coast Guard Road. The diver, a man in his 50s, was wearing a black wetsuit at the time.
Coast Guard and Fire Department crews found a submerged dive light, but couldn't determine if the diver was in the area. However, they were able to recover the light and a fishing spear.
The disappearance does not appear to be connected to Wednesday's Tsunami Advisory because his disappearance took place several hours prior to the estimated arrival of any earthquake-generated waves or currents, the Coast Guard said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Coast Guard at (808) 843-2600.
