On Sunday, September 13th, Hawaii News Now presents the Fall Premiere of Hawaii's best loved musical series "Island Music, Island Hearts" on KGMB at 9 pm. The new episode is titled "The Lim Family at Home in Kohala".
A Coco Palm Pictures production, this hour long special features Na Hoku Hanohano Lifetime Achievement Award winners the Lim Family, honoring their matriarch Mary Ann Lim, who turns 80 in 2016. Also featured is slack key guitar master Sonny Lim (winner of the Grammy Award in the Hawaiian Music category as part of a compilation of slack key masters), Lorna Lim the winner of Song of the Year for the 2010 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, and Nani Lim Yap, kumu hula for the overall winners at the 2004 Merrie Monarch Hula Festival.
The stunning setting for an afternoon of music and hula is Kahua Ranch, high atop Kohala Mountain.
Three generations of Lims perform, including a keiki hula tribute to Aunty Sarah Pule when the third generation of The Lim Family perform "Keokea Paka" celebrating the Kohala Coastine oasis.
Noted chanter, dancer and fashion designer C. Manaola Yap performs as well, and shares some of his ohe kapala (bamboo stamp) designs and patterns.
The music documentary is more than music and dance, with interwoven stories of Kohala, the stories behind the music, the roots of Lim Family hula traditions, and the sharing of family values.
