HANALEI, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The principal of Hanalei School has been reassigned following days of protest over her leadership style.
Lisa McDonald has been reassigned to a position in the district office, school officials said, while Reiko Beralas, vice principal from Kapaa Middle School, will temporarily take over.
On Monday, students and parents carried signs outside the school, saying they were thankful that the state Department of Education' Education's district superintendent listened to them.
Parents, teachers and community members described the school as being in "crisis" because of McDonald's "abrasive" management style, unethical choices and communication style. Many were also unhappy with her decision to create a combination class of kindergarten and first-grade students.
Several educators left as a result of her leadership.
The Department of Education is still investigating the situation.
