KALIHI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Crews with the Department of Parks and Recreation's Urban Forestry Division are working to remove large pieces of a tree that fell onto King Street near Palama Street at around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The tree was standing on the makai side of King Street, and for some unknown reason -- possibly due to heavy rains and winds -- split in half with one portion falling onto the mauka lanes of the roadway and the other part falling onto a sheltered bus stop, collapsing a side of it.
The bus stop is right along the fence line of Kaiulani Elementary School. School officials taped off a section of the campus near the potential debris fall site.
No injuries were reported. The tree pulled down some utility lines causing them to sag, but there are no related outages. Hawaiian Telcom crews and Oceanic Time Warner Cable crews were making repairs.
Police had to divert traffic on King Street around the work site at Palama Street, but the road has since been reopened.
