HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - EXCLUSIVE: Big Island police have arrested the suspected spear thief.
William Carroll, III was picked up in downtown Hilo this afternoon. He's accused of ripping off a section of the spear from the King Kamehameha statue in Wailoa State Park over the weekend.
Carroll was seen on surveillance video walking near the statue, carrying items stolen from a nearby business.
The spear was found days later, in weeds along a channel behind the statue.
Only Hawaii News Now was there as Carroll was brought into the Hilo police station in a blue and white. He turned away from our camera and dropped his head.
He is being held for second-degree theft and second-degree criminal property damage. He was also arrested on suspicion of third-degree theft in connection with the other items he was carrying in the surveillance video.
Carroll has been arrested more than a dozen times for DUI, drug cases and theft.
He has not been charged.
