Broadway actress Loretta Ables Sayre launches “Fans for Nanakuli”

MILILANI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Students attending Nanakuli High and Intermediate School on Oahu's Leeward Coast in Hawaii should soon be feeling relief from the sweltering heat that can sometimes reach 100 degrees in school classrooms.

To address the immediate need for relief, Tony-award-nominated Broadway actress Loretta Ables Sayre recently launched a grassroots effort via Facebook to raise funds for the purchase of 250 oscillating fans for the classrooms at Nanakuli High and Intermediate School.

"I mentor Nanakuli Performing Arts Center students and have been watching the news coverage about how hot is has been in Oahu classrooms, so I reached out to their advisor Robin Kitsu," said Loretta Ables Sayre. "After consulting with his administration, he let me know they would need 250 fans to effectively cool the entire school. So, I launched a campaign via my Facebook account last week and it's been wonderful to see the outpouring of community support and donations from all over Oahu and even as far away as New York."

"It's been amazing to see the response to Loretta's request, said Robin Kitsu, director and instructor for Nanakuli High School Performing Arts Center. "The fans will help to provide a better learning environment for the students. Nanakuli High and Intermediate School is truly grateful to Loretta and everyone who has made a donation so the students can be more productive in the classroom."

Ables Sayre and volunteers delivered the first 50 oscillating fans to the school at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

"School is challenging enough without having to deal with sweltering conditions," continued Ables Sayre. "As of today, we still need 200 fans to meet the needs of our students. Please search your hearts and pocketbooks and help us cool the classrooms."
