(RNN) - The storm previously known as Hurricane Fred has been downgraded to a tropical storm.

The National Hurricane Center said the storm has maximum sustained winds of 70 mph as it continues to move northwest.

Fred is moving at 12 mph and is expected to continue weakening during the next 48 hours.

A Tropical Storm Warning has been in effect for the Cape Verde Islands.

The storm could produce four to six inches of rainfall over the Cape Verde Islands, with a maximum amount of 10 inches.

Heavy rains may cause dangerous flooding and mudslides.

Fred comes days after Tropical Storm Erika flooded the island of Dominica, killing 20 people.

Erika dissipated after passing over Cuba Saturday.
