This morning's local business news will focus on Young Brothers, Queen's in talks with neighbor island hospitals, and hotel occupancy.
Young Brothers reports shipping volume up – but up less than 1% - in the second quarter. Cargo grew 1% to Kahului, 3.5% to Nawiliwili and 12 to Kawaihae – but fell 3% to Hilo. Cargo volume for the year-to-date is down slightly. Farm shipments from Kauai and Kawaihae rebounded by from Hilo and Maui fell.
Queen’s Medical Center confirms it’s in talks with Kona Community Hospital to explore partnership options. They signed a non-disclosure agreement, so no details. Kona Community Hospital is in Kealakekua and also has a medical center in Kohala.
Hotel occupancy was strong last week but not as strong as the week before. As national occupancy fell from 74% to 71%, Oahu fell from 92% to 89%, Maui fell from 82% to 77% and Kauai fell 80% to 73%. The Big Island held at 71% full, though with price discounting, compared to last year.
