Honolulu regular gas falls to $3 per gallon

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu gas prices have fallen 21 cents in the past month, and this morning reached $3 per gallon, AAA reported Wednesday.

More expensive than Honolulu gas at this point are Seattle, $3.08; Reno, $3.16; Chicago, $3.22; and Las Vegas, $3.24, reported AAA.

Selected AAA average regular prices Wednesday:

  • San Francisco $3.40
  • Wailuku $3.45
  • Juneau $3.51
  • San Diego $3.58
  • Los Angeles $3.65
  • Anchorage $3.29

Behind the averages can be found a wide range of prices, from gas selling for $2.55 at the Ewa Safeway and below $2.90 at several stations from Kapahulu to Kapolei, to $3.69 at stations in Kahului and Princeville, according to HawaiiGasPrices.com.

Hilo gas has fallen seven cents in the past month, now stands at $3.21 a gallon. More expensive are Chicago, $3.22, Silicon Valley, $3.24, Anchorage, $3.29, and San Francisco, $3.40.

Wailuku, the Maui County seat, has fallen only about a penny in recent weeks, and its current average price is $3.45. More than that are Fairbanks, $3.50, Juneau a penny more than that, San Diego $3.58, Orange County $3.60, Santa Barbara $3.62 and Los Angeles $3.65.

Prices in Hawaii tend to be highest on Molokai and Lanai, and neighbor islands prices in general are higher because there is less competition, especially at the distributor level.
