LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A state lawmaker from Kauai has been charged with failing to properly report campaign contributions.
Rep. James Tokioka agreed to admit to a single violation tied to some changes he made on his spending reports last year. He reported no donations for the first half of 2014, but when investigators spotted discrepancies, he amended his filing to say that he took in $26,000. Tokioka said it was a clerical error.
In a plea deal, he agreed to pay $1,000 and issue a public apology.
The maximum penalty could have been jail time and a four-year ban from office.
