HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - Heavy rains have eased up enough on the Big Island of Hawaii for forecasters to allow a flood advisory to expire.
Earlier, flood waters on the Big Island led to evacuations, mainly in the Anekona Estates area. No homes have been damaged at this time.
Officials have closed Akoni Pule Highway at Kawaihae Harbor. Traffic from North Kohala is being detoured through the Kohala Ranch subdivision.
The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at the Waimea Community Center for residents who were evacuated from their homes due to flooding. The Waimea Community Center is located at 65-1158 Mamalahoa Highway.
