How Hawaii Five-0 closed H-3 for production shoot

HALAWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Oahu motorists be aware, the H-3 Halawa side will be closed Wednesday, August 19 from 4 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Kaneohe bound direction for a Hawaii Five-0 shoot.

But some are wondering how the production managed to close down an entire stretch of highway.

"Every time the Department of Transportation gets a request like this, it is considered on a case by case basis. In this case the time, date, direction of the roadway of this request is relatively low volume," explained Department of Transportation Spokesman Tim Sakahara.

In addition to traffic flow, the DOT also considers what stresses could be physically put on the roadway.

"If that will cause some irreversible damage and things, if that's the case certainly we wouldn't allow it," added Sakahara.

The Hawaii State Film Commission also gets involved, acting as an intermediary between the production and governmental agency.

"We know who has the jurisdiction over whatever area that is, then we initiate a conversation with those state officials to find out what's possible," said State Film Commissioner Donne Dawson.

With the Likelike and Pali as viable windward bound options, the state made the call to close the roadway. Additionally, the production is paying for all state related costs. As is always the case with unpopular transit decisions, the state and production, pleading patience and the greater good.

"Certainly we know that it is going to impact some people, and we certainly thank them for their patience and we can understand their frustrations as well" said Sakahara.  "It's a good industry for Hawaii, it employees a lot of our people" said Dawson.
