The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a High Surf Advisory for east-facing shores of Maui and the Big Island for a building east swell and wind waves from tropical cyclone Hilda.
The advisory is in effect until at least 6 p.m. Thursday.
Forecasters expect 5- to 8-foot waves on east shores of both islands.
Impacts will be high with the possibility of waves sweeping across beaches, with very strong breaking waves and rip currents. Large breaking waves may also impact harbors, making it dangerous to navigate harbor channels.
