Man dies in moped crash in Kahului

KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 54-year-old man died in a moped crash Monday in Kahului, according to the Maui Police Department.

Police said the incident happened at around 10:25 p.m. when the moped rider was going south on Kahului Beach Road and crashed into a Cadillac CTS that was traveling north and making a left turn onto Kaihee Place from a designated left-turn lane.

The operator of the scooter, Wailuku resident Marshall Carvalho, was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition where he later died. He was wearing a helmet at the time, police said.

The 25-year-old driver of the Cadillac CTS was not injured, officials said. A preliminary investigation revealed that he was wearing his seat belt.

Police are still investigating whether speed, drugs and alcohol are factors.

This is Maui County's 15th fatality for 2015 as compared to 15 at the same time as last year.
