Schools back in session after Wahiawa brush fire prompts closures

WAHIAWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - [Update 8/5/15]

The DOE said public schools that were closed Tuesday are back in session Wednesday thanks to overnight and morning rain that helped improve conditions in Wahiawa. Wahiawa Baptist Preschool and Kindergarten as well as Trinity Lutheran Church and School also confirmed that they are open.

Several schools are closed Tuesday as a result of a brush fire in Wahiawa, school and state Department of Education officials confirmed.

The following schools are closed:

  • Wahiawa Elementary School
  • Wahiawa Middle School
  • Iliahi Elementary School
  • Leilehua High School
  • Trinity Lutheran Church and School
  • Wahiawa Baptist Preschool

The fire, which broke out on Saturday, has burned nearly 475 acres and was 10 percent contained at last check. A mandatory evacuation was put into place Monday night for about 100 homes, but was later lifted.

So far, no structures have burned, but residents in the area remain on high alert.
